December

  • Regularly check that your winter protection structures are still securely in place and that your Greenhouse heater is still working.
  • Prune apples and pears (open-grown), acers, birches and vines.
  • Harvest leeks, parsnips, winter cabbage, sprouts and remaining root crops.
  • Move patio pots to house wall to give support and protection.
  • Prevent ponds, water features and bird baths from freezing over either by draining or by placing a small ball in them.
  • Weather permitting, deciduous trees and shrubs can still be planted and transplated.
  • Protect evergreens from cold winds by using Horticultural Fleece.
  • Protect treasured plants, especially alpines and bulbs, from slugs¬†by¬†surrounding with pellets.
  • There is still time to plant new fruit bushes if the soil is not frozen.
  • Plan ahead for next year's garden with seed and plant catalogues.
