Most gardens have shady spaces that can seem hard to fill with lovely, attractive plants but some of the most beautiful garden plants can grow perfectly well in a shady space and even thrive for many years! Make sure you know what your soil conditions are so you can pick the right plants to grow in shade and you can create a colourful spot in the garden even without sunlight. Here's what we recommend:
Big foliage and flowers on tall stems, Hostas are a great addition to a shady border. There are many varieties available from dark green foliage to even slightly tinged blue plus lilac, pink or white flowers there are plenty to pick for your garden. Slugs and snails also enjoy them so young plants and shoots will need protecting. Other than that, Hostas are easy to grow.
Another top plant for a shady space is the Heuchera. With frilly foliage available in many colours they are the staple plant for a shady space. In fact, they thrive in shade. Deep reds to oranges, yellows and greens the leaves are of interest most of the year - a great plant to brighten up a dark spot.
This is a great plant for shade and thrives in woodland conditions shaded by trees. The little white flowers appear along arching stems in spring and carry on until summer time. They grow well with the others in this list.
An absolute favourite amongst gardeners, especially for shady spaces. The gorgeous Bleeding Heart is the perfect garden perennial. Its little pink flowers are shaped just like hearts with a droplet of white. There are a few varieties, mostly pink but also in all white.
Such pretty plants which work well in and around other shade tolerant plants. Preferably with a little dappled light, these well-loved perennials will grow perfectly well. From deep reds to pinks and pure whites there are many to choose from. The tiny little flowers are surrounded by coloured bracts making this plant a talking point.
The foamy flowers stand tall on Astilbes that grow great in shady spaces in the garden. With so many varieties to choose from you can take your pick. Also known as False Goats Beard, when you see the flowers you will know why! With bright pink to red and candy floss pale pink, there are plenty to group together for a brightly coloured border.
